The comparison of these three lists, each supposed to contain the proprietors of Hempstead who made a division of the land in 1647, shows that there may be some contention as to who was actually a settler in 1643, and who shared in the division in 1647. The ownership of land in Hempstead became such a complex issue that Abel "Blue" Smith and others were commissioned about the late 1600's, early 1700's to sort it out going back to the beginning. Their findings occupy two whole books of the Hempstead Town Records; and it is probably these findings which provide part of the source of these lists. It would be well worthwhile perusing that compilation in detail for clues as to whether Robert Ashman was actually there in 1643 or 1647, and for when the Jaycocks arrived.
